Richard Bruton takes a crack at explaining Don’t Be Fooled by the Rocks over at the Forbidden Planet International blog.  What does he make of it? Something like this:

“Every page sends you off to fill in every bit of the story, and then brings you back down with the turn of the page to start the next adventure.“

Which is as it should be.
